In addition to contributions in two clinical abstracts and several teaching activities during his fellowship training, Dr. Li was also leading the development of several clinical tests, including plasma cell enrichment for multiple myeloma, NGS hematological cancer panel, non-invasive prenatal testing, and mutation quantification for spinal muscular atrophy.     Biography

    Raffaele Pilla, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Doctor Europaeus, received his Master’s degree in Pharmacy at G. d’Annunzio University in Chieti-Pescara, Italy in 2005, where he also served internships at the Cell Physiology Laboratory and Molecular Biology Laboratory. Prior to his degree, he was an Erasmus Student at Faculté de Pharmacie de Reims in Reims, France. He received his Doctor Europaeus in 2010 from Pitié-Salpétrière Institute in Paris, France. Also in 2010, he received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Physiology, and Pathology of Muscle at G. d’Annunzio University in Chieti-Pescara, Italy. He was hired as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida in Tampa, on two research grants respectively funded by the Office of Naval Research (US Navy) and Divers’ Alert Network. He has written and lectured widely on his experiences. Dr. Pilla has been involved in ongoing research at the University of South Florida with the use of ketone esters. The initial work, funded by the Office of Naval Research, focused on using ketone esters to prevent CNS oxygen toxicity. Dr. Pilla is working to coordinate efforts in the United States and Italy to expand the ketone ester research to other conditions such as epilepsy and cancer and its use as an alternative metabolic fuel. Dr. Pilla has also served extensively in various international medical missions, orphan and homeless programs, emergency medicine rescue and training, and animal rescue and fostering. He is fluent in Italian, English, French, and Spanish. He has a special interest in journalism and photography, and he enjoys sailing, SCUBA diving, ultralight airplane piloting, soccer, volleyball, jogging, and motorcycles.

    Professor Ronald Prineas MB BS (University of Sydney/Australia) PhD (University of London/UK) FACE, FACC, FAHA, FRCP (Lond), FRCPE, Professor Emeritus Division of Public Health Sciences, Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was director of EPICARE section of Epidemiology and Prevention, Division of Public Health Sciences until retirement in 2009; Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami, Florida from 1988 to 1997. Before that, he was on the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; at the University of Melbourne, Australia; the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London UK; and clinical resident at the Royal Infirmary in Glasgow, Scotland; Royal Perth Hospital, Western Australia; and the Royal Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney Australia. He has continued experience in cardiovascular disease clinical trials and epidemiological studies particularly with population electrocardiology and blood pressure methodology.

    He is the senior author of the Minnesota Code Manual of Electrocardiographic Findings; and has authored over 400 peer-reviewed scientific publications.  He has extensive experience as PI, chair and member of all committees (including data and safety monitoring committees) related to clinical trials and longitudinal epidemiologic studies related to coronary heart disease, hypertension and diabetes (among children, adults and the aged) conducted by NIH, over the past 45 years, and latterly has been an investigator in international clinical trials among HIV infected adults. In 2011, he was appointed a position of assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Andrology, Faculty of Medicine, Sohag University, Egypt.

    He is active in both basic and clinical research.
