In this paper, the author analyzes the South African Freedom Charter (1955), and the South African Constitution (1996), each based upon and codifying major principles of justice in the Republic of South Africa. The purpose of the paper is to determine which theories of justice motivated them, are reflected in them, and are meant to be protected by them. The analysis reveals that at least four major ways of hinking about justice are illustrated, to one degree or another, in both documents. The paper ends with a discussion of the National Development Plan, the country’s latest effort to continue to move towards more social justice in the country.
